Maintaining a Healthy Deer Population

Maintain a Healthy Deer Population with Protein Feeders

Whether you own your own hunting property or manage a recreational property, maintaining a healthy, well-fed wildlife population is a challenge throughout the year. Seasonal changes, especially in colder regions, along with changes in natural habitat can limit the availability of vegetation and other food sources. In winter months, this is particularly true and can lead to malnutrition and starvation. When natural protein levels are low, providing additional foods high in protein will improve the physical condition and health of the deer on your property.

The use of protein feeders can help you deliver consistent nutrition throughout the year to enhance antler growth, fawn production and overall deer health. Deer need protein for maintenance and growth of all organs in the body as well as for many physiological functions. A protein feeding program gives the deer the energy they need during severe winter months and results in higher fawn survival rates. It also improves the body recovery process during the rut when bucks get worn down.

Studies indicate that protein contributes to maximum antler growth. A whitetail buck’s fully developed antlers are comprised of about 45% protein. However, body growth takes precedence over antler development, so the availability of supplemental protein can boost antler development and contribute to bigger racks in future seasons. “A study in Texas found that bucks fed a 16% crude protein diet grew antlers that scored 20 inches higher Boone and Crockett, than did bucks fed 8% crude protein (Hamel et al. 1989)” – MSU Deer Lab. Protein feeders provide the extra protein that will make a difference in antler growth.

Protein is also critical to the growth of does and fawns. Pregnant does have an even higher protein requirement, especially during lactation with the milk averaging 8.2% protein. This requirement increases for does with twins. A summer of producing milk for fawns decreases the doe’s body weight and condition and regaining their strength is critical for surviving the winter. Healthier does lead to healthier fawns and higher fawn survival rates. When you provide protein feeders for deer, both bucks and does will get a good start in their first year of life and they will likely be superior animals into the future.

Once you begin using deer protein feeders in your management program, you’ll see a healthier herd and higher fawn survival. Subsequent seasons will show increased body weight across the entire deer population and a noticeable increase in antler size. Year round, daily access to this supplemental source of nutrition will help your herd reach their maximum potential.

Whitetail antler growth usually begins in March so now is a great time to get your feeders in place.
